22. FRANKLIN & LIEPERS FORK, TENNESSEE

Updated: Jun 28

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Franklin was fought in this eponymous city on November 30, 1864, resulting in a staggering 10,000 casualties (killed, wounded, captured, and missing). Today the town, 25 miles south of Nashville is a quiet provincial place, almost with an air of a community in mourning, with quaint shops and attractive retro architecture.

Still quieter, the tiny village of Leipers Fork (population 650) lies 10 miles away,  surrounded by miles of neatly manicured paddocks and stables. The country houses around here have all the grandeur of the old plantations. This is an expensive area in spite of Liepers Fork's deceptive guise of impecunity.
